كان الفاتح إبراهيم باشا من أبرز الشخصيات في تاريخ الشرق العربي الحديث ، ومن أبسل قواده قاد الجيوش المصرية المُظفَّرة في حروب الوهابيين والمورة والشام. ولعل فتحه الشام كان من أكثر أعماله توفيقًا وأبعدها أثرًا، فقد سار فاتحًا، والنصر معقود بأعلامه، من غزة إلى عكا إلى دمشق إلى حمص إلى حلب، وتخطى تخوم سوريا إلى آسيا الصغرى، من أطنه إلى طرسوس إلى أزمير فقونيه، وهو يَهزم أو يأسر جيشًا بعد جيش حتى أصبح يهدد الآستانة عاصمة السلطنة العثمانية. هذا هو الفتح المجيد الذي رأى المؤلف داود بركات أن يدوِّن حوادثه ووقائعه ونتائجه السياسية والاجتماعية في فصول متتالية .
