يُعاني عمر الحمزاوي من حالة إفلاس معنوي وعدمية، ويحاول الخروج منها بكل السبل الممكنة، فهو يواجه أزمة وجودية حادة ولا يجد لحياته معنى يجعله يأخذها مأخذ الجد، لذا تُعتبَر "الشحاذ" إحدى روايات محفوظ الفلسفية التي عالجت أزمة الإنسان الوجودية وحالة الضجر التي تفسد عليه شغف الحياة واكتشاف المعنى بداخلها، وهي إحدى تجارب محفوظ في السعي لاكتشاف معنى الحياة العميق. نُشرت الرواية عام 1965، وانتقلت لشاشة السينما في فيلم للمخرج حسام الدين مصطفى عام 1973.
