تعد كتب الطبقات من مناهج البحث التاريخي التي ابتكرها المؤرخين المسلمين مبكرا و الطَّبَقة، لغة: جمعها طَّبَقات من المصدر طبقه الذي تؤول أكثر معانيه إلى تماثل شيئين إذا وضع أحدهما على الآخر ساواه وكانا على حذوٍ واحد، فقيل منه (تطابق الشيئان)، إذا تساويا وتماثلا، وطبقات الناس مراتبهم وقيل الطبقة عشرون سنة،ويراد بالطبقة أحيانا الجماعة المشتركة في لقيا الشيخ ، أو أبناء جيل واحد أو عصر واحد أو صنف واحد، واعتنوا بها وألفوا فيها كتبا مهمة. والطبقة اصطلاحا: تقسيم إسلامي، وهو أقدم تقسيم زمني وُجِدَ في الفكر التاريخي الإسلامي.
