استقى شكسبير موضوع هذه المسرحية من الأديب الإيطالي بوكاشيو، الذي ألَّف قصة «ديكاميرون»، وأجراها على نسق كتاب «ألف ليلة وليلة»، وجعلها نوادر تُقَصُّ تِباعًا يومًا بعد آخر. وفي اليوم الثالث يحكي المؤلف القصة التاسعة، وتكاد في جملتها وجوهرها تماثل مسرحية شكسبير. وقد اقتبسها الشاعر من ترجمة لبوكاشيو، أصدرها «وليم بينتر» في عام ١٥٦٦، مع قصص أخرى، جعل عنوانها «قصر اللذات».
