إرنست هيمنجواي المولود سنة 1898والحائز على جائزة نوبل للأدب عام1954. فى هذه الرواية نحن أمام عجوز يخرج بقاربه ويتوغل قي البحر لكي يصطاد ويتمكن من صيد سمكة كبيرة ويبدأ في رحلة العودة إلى الشاطئ وهو قرير العين بها لأن رحلته أتت بثمارها ولكن ليس كل ما يتمناه المرء يدركه فسرعان ما تخرج أسماك القرش المتوحشة من مكامنها البحرية لكي تنهال على السمكة التي ربطها العجوز إلى قاربه الصغير وبالرغم من كل محاولات العجوز المستميتة لكي ينقذ سمكته إلا أن جهوده ذهبت أدراج الرياح ونجحت القروش في التهام السمكة ولم يتبقى منها سوى جمجمتها وسلسلتها الفقرية.
