للإمام الحافظ الكبير أبو الحسن علي بن عبد الله بن جعفر السعدي، المشهور بـ«ابن المديني» اهتمامٌ خاص وتفرّد في باب معرفة علل الأحاديث. ومُصَنَّفه في ذلك من أحسن المصنفات في بابه؛ قال الحافظُ عماد الدين ابنُ كثير:«ومِن أحسنِ كتابٍ وُضع في ذلك - يعني في علل الأحاديث - وأجلِّه وأفحلِه «كتاب العلل» لعلي بن المديني شيخ البخاري، وسائرُ المحدّثين بعدَه في هذا الشأن على الخصوص.
