يعد هذا الكتاب بأجزائه الأربعة رائدا في مجال دراسة الصحافة العربية ، حيث صدرت طبعته الأولى عام 1913 وسعى مؤلفه الكونت فيليب دي طرّازي على رصد أخبار كل جريدة ومجلَّة عربية ظهرت في العالم شرقًا, وغربًا مع التعريف بأصحابها, والمحرّرين فيها, وتراجم مشاهيرهم. يقول المؤلف " قسمت الكتاب إلى أربعة أقسام أو حقب بحيث تتناول كل حقبة قسمًا من أخبار الصحافة. ثمَّ صدرته بتوطئةٍ ذات ثمانية فصول في تعريف الصحافة وآدابها, واسماء مؤَرخيها وغير ذلك مما تهمُّ معرفته إِتمامًا للفائدة, وختمتهُ بجدول عام يشتمل على اسماء الصحف بلا استثناء شيء منها على قدر ما يستطيعهُ باحث محقق في بلاد الشرق. وقد رتبتها بحسب البلدان والمماليك التي ظهرت فيها, متتبعًا في تاريخ صدورها نظام الأقدم فالأقدم ".
