نشرت هذه القصة للمرة الأولى في سنة ١٩١٤ على أنها بقلم مصري فلاح، نشرها الكاتب بعد تردد في وضع اسمه عليها، فقد بدأ بكتابتها بباريس في أبريل سنة ١٩١٠، وفرغ منها في مارس سنة ١٩١١، وفي سنة ١٩١٢، عاد المؤلف إلى مصر واشتغل بالمحاماة وزاد تردده في النشر، خشية ما قد تجني صفة الكاتب القصصي على اسم المحامي ، لكن حب محمد حسين هيكل الفتيّ لهذه الثمرة من ثمرات الشباب انتهى بالتغلب عل تردده ، ودفع بها كي تنشرها، واكتفي بوضع كلمتي «مصري فلاح» بديلًا من اسمه كمؤلف .
