تعزي نهضة الفن التشكيلي بأوروبا إلى الاهتمام بدراسة آثاره من الحضارتين الإغريقية والرومانية، ولكن موجة الحياة المتتالية ما لبثت أن خلعت على إنتاج الفن- منذ القرن السابع عشر- آثاره من السطحية، فأصبح ضربة من التنميط، دون تفهم لأهدافه الإنسانية أو تعمق في جوهره الكامن، واستحال الفن بهذا إلى نشاط تزييني يستجيب لأذواق مجتمع تتنازعه عوامل طارئة، وكان حكم الفرد وسلطان الطبقة من تلك العوامل التي أحالت الفن من صفته كنشاط إنساني وكرسالة نابعة من عقيدة إلى حرفة قائمة على الخبرة العملية فحسب، تستجدي المال وأصحاب السلطة من أجل العيش. إن المتتبع خطى الفن الحديث منذ بدأ القرن العشرين يضل السبيل بين تياراته المتشابكة، وليس أفضل في رأي المؤلف لتفهم دوافعها من أن نعود إلى الفن نفسه ومدى تأثره بما يسود كل عصر من عوامل اجتماعية، وخضوعه لحتميات التطور التاريخي.
