في ربيع سنة ١٩٢١م قدم سورية المسيو أستاش دي لوري (E. de Lorey) الفرنسي من قِبَل المجمع العلمي ومتحف اللوفر في باريس؛ للتنقيب عن الآثار الإسلامية في دمشق، وفي أوائل سنة ١٩٢٢م ابتاع «قصر أسعد باشا العظم» بمبلغ ستين ألف ليرة سورية، واتخذه مقرًّا له وبدأ بترميمه وجمع بعض الآثار إليه، وأعلن أنه سينشئ فيه مدرسة لتعليم الصناعات الوطنية التي اشتهرت بها سورية عمومًا ودمشق خصوصًا، وعاد مرارًا إلى باريس، وفي حادثة دمشق الأخيرة منذ شهرٍ احترق هذا القصر وزالت محاسنه وتشتتت آثاره، فكتبت المؤلف عيسى إسكندر المعلوف هذه المقالة للتعريف بـ " قصر آل العظم في دمشق " مزيَّنَةً ببعض رسومه.
