للحكمة والمثل في الأدب العربي بعامة والشعر بخاصة مكانة ممتازة، وقد جمع الأستاذ عبد الله فكري طائفة غير قليلة من الحكم والأمثال العربية من مختلف العصور، إذ نجد فيها ما هو من العصر الجاهلي، أو العصر الأموي أو العصر العباسي، بل نجد بعض الأمثال من العصور المتأخرة. وقد رتبها الأستاذ حسب أوائل الحروف ترتيباً ألفبائياً وبلغ عددها 1232 حكمة ومثلاً.
