江南高邮人，原籍辽东，字长伯。武举出身，明末任总兵，字宁远。曾参与松山之战，封平西伯，率军驻守山海关。李自成率义军进占北京，吴三桂向清睿亲王多尔衮请兵，打败李自成，被清封为平西王。顺治十四年授平西大将军，会同多尼等攻占南明云贵地区，执杀明桂王朱由榔。晋封亲王，坐镇云南，兼辖贵州，手握重兵。康熙十二年(1673)，在云南发动叛乱，自称周王、天下都招讨兵马大元帅，蓄发易衣冠，以复明为招牌。康熙十七年(1678)在衡州称帝，改元昭武，以衡州为定天府，不久暴死。其孙世潘继立，改元洪化。康熙二十年(1681)，清军三路围攻昆明，世潘自杀，云贵悉平。
