太宰治二十一歲時，在銀座咖啡館認識一有夫之婦，同居三天後，他倆吞下安眠藥，在鎌倉投水自殺。結果太宰治獲救，年僅十八歲的女方死亡。太宰治因而被控“幫助自殺罪”，後雖被判不予起訴，但他基於相約殉情卻讓女人獨自死亡的罪惡意識，創作了《小丑之花》。
《小丑之花》主角大庭葉藏與《人間失格》主角同名，描寫的是葉藏殉情失敗後進療養院的事，但不同於《人間失格》中葉藏的自卑、怯懦、頹廢，《小丑之花》裏的的葉藏，年輕、衝動又驕傲。太宰治在這篇作品裏，剖析了他日後的巔峰之作《人間失格》裏看似消極頹廢，實際上卻在絕境中求活的主角大庭葉藏的心路歷程，還透露了許多關於寫作的秘密。
另收錄有太宰治記錄鐮倉自縊未遂經歷的《狂言之神》；與《小丑之花》《狂言之神》同屬“虛構的徬徨”三部曲的《虛構之春》；
