In seinem epischen Gedicht "Achilleis" beschreibt Johann Wolfgang von Goethe die Verwicklungen um Achilles Tod. Er bricht den ursprünglich geplanten "Achilleis in 8 Gesängen" jedoch bereits nach dem ersten Gesang ab, zu groß erweist sich der Widerspruch zwischen dem dramatischen Stoff und der epischen Form. Goethe beschreibt Achilleis als einen sehr tief bewegten berührenden und sanftmütigen sowie unerschrockenen Kämpfer. Achilleis bevorstehender Tod, über welchen sich dieser bewusst ist, bildet die Hauptthematik dieses Werkes.
