Alexander de Grote: Triomf en tragiek van een veldheer

De Romeinse historicus Quintus Curtius Rufus beschreef in de eerste eeuw n. Chr. de spectaculaire verovering van het Perzische rijk door Alexander de Grote. Curtius laat zien hoe Alexander tussen 334 en 323 v. Chr. evolueert van een primus inter pares tot een hooghartig oosters despoot, met samenzweringen om hem te vermoorden tot gevolg. Maar ook Alexanders grote tegenstander, de Perzische koning Darius, komt goed uit de verf, en wordt als verliezer met veel waardering beschreven. Curtius’ stijl is bloemrijk en meeslepend en zijn redevoeringen zijn van grote klasse. Zijn werk leest als een moderne historische roman en diende als een inspiratiebron voor grote schrijvers als Petrarca en Louis Couperus.
