Lyric Poetry
Meleagros is een even extatische liefdesdichter als Catullus. Hij vervlocht zijn liefdesverzen met die van voorgangers tot een kunstige krans die terechtkwam (en zoekraakte) in de immense Griekse Anthologie. Met erotische motieven als het morgenlied, bitterzoet liefdesverdriet en de vuurpijlen schietende Eros heeft hij zijn stempel gedrukt op de westerse liefdeslyriek.
Hoog tijd dus voor de eerste Nederlandse vertaling van de ‘laatste en meest vindingrijke van alle hellenistische epigramschrijvers’ (Peter Jay). Catullusvertaler Paul Claes kweet zich met verve van zijn taak.
