When Lord Stretherdale, an eccentric and miserly peer, dies suddenly on the French Riviera, the task of informing his heir and preparing the family castle for the funeral falls to young solicitor’s clerk Martin Mailey. The missing heir, now the new Lord Stretherdale, is nowhere to be found, and Mailey is sent to the remote Yorkshire estate of Stretherdale Castle to make arrangements.
