Stijn Miller, hoofdpersoon van Smeets' eerdere sportromans, is in 1954 als kind bij de proloog van de Tour de France in Amsterdam. Later maakt hij als journalist ook de prologen in Scheveningen (1973), Leiden (1978) en 's-Hertogenbosch (1996) van dichtbij mee. In 2010 start de Tour in Rotterdam. De oude Miller is weer opgetrommeld voor talloze knotsgekke evenementen rond de proloog. Maar wanneer hij een telefoontje krijgt van een oude liefde, grijpt het leven in the fast lane hem plotseling naar de keel. Halsoverkop verlaat hij de Tour, weg uit de schijnwerpers, terug naar de plek waar het allemaal begon. Daar moet hij de verpletterende waarheid onder ogen zien...
