Tot 1950 was Borneo grotendeels bedekt met oerbos. Nu is de helft verdwenen voor de aanleg van plantages. In het huidige tempo zal al het bos voor het eind van deze eeuw zijn omgevormd in plantages. Het bruikbare hout is handelswaar en de rest van het bos wordt ter plaatse verbrand. Elke zomer drijven zwarte rookwolken over zee naar Singapore waar ze een levensbedreigende smog veroorzaken. Dan neemt de regering van Singapore het heft in handen. Ze huurt een grote oerwoudconcessie op West Kalimantan en geeft oliepalmplanter Tjibbe Veenstra en bosbouwconsultant Joost Hellweg opdracht methoden te ontwikkelen die de trend moeten zetten voor duurzame bosexploitatie en palmolieteelt. De twee Nederlanders boeken succes, wat de afgunst wekt van andere planters en bosexploitanten die handjeklap spelen met de corrupte gouverneur Rudy Oetomo en zijn handlangers, onder wie de malafide houthandelaar Bob Sikali. Het project van de veelbelovende, wereldwijd aanvaarde bosexploitatie- en ontginningsmethoden dreigt ten onder te gaan.
