Der britische Schriftsteller Oscar Wilde war wegen Unzucht zu zwei Jahren Zuchthaus verurteilt worden. Aus der Haft in Reading schrieb er einen langen Brief an seinen Freund und Liebhaber Alfred Douglas, in dem er nicht nur seine Beziehung zu diesem ausfarbeitet, sondern auch von den unmenschlichen Zustände im Zuchthaus mit Kindergefangenen und Kinderzwangsarbeit berichtet. Der Brief ist posthum unter dem Titel ›De Profundis‹ veröffentlicht worden.
