In april 2012 stopte J.L. Heldring na 52 jaar met zijn befaamde column Dezer dagen. Sinds 1960 schreef hij op de opiniepagina van eerst de Nieuwe Rotterdamse Courant en later NRC Handelsblad zijn column over buitenlandse politiek, taal, godsdienst, Europa, cultuur en geschiedenis. Aanvankelijk begon Heldring de column omdat zijn hoofdredacteur hem als adjunct geen andere verantwoordelijkheden wenste af te staan. Gaandeweg vond hij in zijn stijlvolle opstellen een levenstaak: vanaf de zijlijn meedenken. Overtuigd als journalist in al deze onderwerpen een dilettant te zijn heeft hij echter generaties lezers getoond hoe scherpzinnig vanuit dilettantisme gedacht en geredeneerd kan worden. Politiek denken op columnformaat heeft in de Nederlandse pers nergens zo'n hoge vlucht genomen als juist in Heldrings column.
