Doreen by C. J. Dennis is a heartfelt and humorous narrative poem that captures the charm, struggles, and everyday life of ordinary Australians in the early 20th century. Written in Dennis's signature colloquial verse style, the work blends romance, humor, and social observation into an engaging and accessible poetic story.

The poem follows the experiences of a young couple, highlighting their relationship as it develops amid the realities of working-class life. Through vivid dialogue and rhythmic storytelling, Dennis brings to life the personalities, emotions, and interactions of characters who feel both authentic and deeply human.

At its core, Doreen is a love story—simple, sincere, and grounded in everyday experience. It explores themes of affection, misunderstanding, loyalty, and the small but meaningful moments that shape relationships. The emotional journey of the characters is presented with warmth and gentle humor, making their story relatable and enduring.

C. J. Dennis uses Australian vernacular to full effect, giving the poem a distinctive voice that reflects the culture, humor, and rhythm of spoken language. This stylistic choice enhances the realism of the characters while also adding charm and personality to the narrative.

Beyond its romantic elements, the poem also offers a glimpse into social life, work, and community during the period. It reflects the values, challenges, and aspirations of everyday people, presenting their world with affection and respect.

Dennis's writing balances lighthearted humor with emotional sincerity, allowing moments of comedy to sit alongside deeper reflections on love and life. This combination gives the poem its lasting appeal and emotional resonance.

Doreen remains an important example of Australian narrative poetry, celebrated for its storytelling, character development, and use of vernacular language to express universal human experiences.

Ideal for readers of narrative poetry, romantic verse, and classic Australian literature, this work offers a warm and engaging portrait of love and life in an earlier era.
