La primera novela de Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, El final de Norma, fue compuesta a los dieciocho años y publicada en 1855. Se trata de una obra romántica, una historia de amor en la que un joven apasionado persigue al objeto de su deseo a través de media Europa. Es una obra juvenil, imaginativa y fantástica, con rasgos folletinescos. Desde su retiro en Segovia, Alarcón rehizo su novela El final de Norma, cuya primera versión había llevado a cabo en Guadix, publicándola en el periódico El Occidente, en el año 1855.
