Sin embargo, la amenaza de agotamiento de sus yacimientos salitreros preocupaba a científicos británicos y alemanes. Ante el riesgo de hambruna, la ciencia se convirtió en la única esperanza. Los químicos alemanes lograron el milagro: inventaron el salitre artificial, salvando a millones de personas del hambre. Pero para Chile, fue desastroso; la invención provocó su ruina y el país se sumió en la miseria.
