Jenseits des Lustprinzips ist ein Essay von Sigmund Freud aus dem Jahr 1920, der einen wichtigen Wendepunkt in seinem theoretischen Ansatz markiert. Zuvor führte Freud das meiste menschliche Verhalten auf den sexuellen Instinkt - Eros oder Libido, die in zwei Formen auftritt, als Narzissmus und als objektbezogene Liebe - zurück. Mit diesem Essay ging Freud "über" das einfache Lustprinzip hinaus und entwickelte seine Antriebstheorie mit der Hinzufügung des Todestriebs, Tendenz zur Selbstzerstörung, neben dem Lebenstrieb.
Es gibt nun auch den Trieb als Drang, einen früheren Zustand wiederherzustellen - unabhängig vom Lustprinzip; Unlust wird dabei in Kauf genommen, etwa in Form von Angst, und kann das Lustprinzip außer Kraft setzen.
