Grabbe war neben Georg Büchner der Wegbereiter des modernen deutschen Dramas. In seinen Stücken wird Geschichte in kraftvoller und desillusionistischer Weise vergegenwärtigt. Zu den wesentlichen Dramen gehören u. a. "Herzog Theodor von Gothland" sowie "Don Juan und Faust" (uraufgeführt am 29.3.1829, erste und einzige Inszenierung eines seiner Stücke zu Lebzeiten). Das berühmte Lustspiel "Scherz, Satire, Ironie und tiefere Bedeutung" hingegen trägt grotesk-fantastische Züge. Grabbe war mit Tieck, Heine und Immermanns befreundet. Er starb verarmt und einsam im Alter von nur 34 Jahren.
