De Nederlandse Romée brengt haar jeugd door in Italië. Jaren later belandt ze met haar geliefde Sergio in Portugal, waar hij onverwacht overlijdt. Ellen van Herk (Rotterdam, 1967) schrijft vanaf haar kinderjaren verhalen, maar sinds ze in 2014 met haar man Ralph een tweede huis in Portugal kocht, doet ze daar inspiratie op voor haar romans. Ze gaat moeilijke thema's zoals kindermisbruik, huiselijk geweld en alcoholisme niet uit de weg. Haar romans spelen zich grotendeels af in Portugal. Naast het schrijven is ze freelance notulist voor een onderzoeksbureau en een taalmaatje voor statushouders. Ze verblijft zowel in Nederland als in Portugal.
