#1 I grew up in a house with ten siblings in New Jersey. My mother was always on the move, doing dozens of things at once. She kept the house going by putting her finger on the special gift she saw in each of her children and making us believe that that gift was uniquely ours.

#2 I was working the front section one night when I met Ramone, a man from the Basque Country who ordered a cup of tea. He told me he was from the upper echelon of French-Spanish society. I didn’t need to weigh the options: I took the bus home or be driven home by him in his yellow Lincoln Continental.

#3 I met Ray, a wealthy real estate developer, who gave me a ride home every night. He offered to pay for a week at the Barbizon Hotel for Women in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. I jumped at the offer and packed my black ribbed sweater, two pleated skirts, and navy blue peacoat.

#4 I created my makeshift Corcoran-Simone office on the sofa my roommate had borrowed from his parents. I worked out the numbers and realized that the big ads were bigger than my budget, so I decided to keep my ad to four lines or fewer each week.
