#1 The Indian sage Padampa Sangye said, One act of aggression is heavier than one hundred acts of desire. As an illustration, say that you see a homeless beggar on the street. You take a moment to imagine yourself in the beggar’s shoes. It becomes clear to you that he wants to be free from suffering as much as you do. Immense tsewa wells up in your heart.
#2 The path to a joyful and peaceful heart depends on developing new habits of thinking and acting for the benefit of others. This comes about gradually through repetition. Any time we open our hearts and stretch beyond the limits of our self-interest, we are accumulating merit.
#3 The bodhisattva path contains methods for protecting our merit from our own negative tendencies. When we set out to do anything positive, we can make an aspiration that our actions will contribute to a greater cause: our eventual enlightenment for the benefit of all beings.
#4 Merit is the accumulation of good deeds, and it can be dedicated to enlightenment to protect it from destruction. When we dedicate our merit, we protect it from our habitually self-centered mind, which can make self-destructive mistakes.
