The Axis emerged from successive diplomatic efforts by Germany, Italy, and Japan to secure their own expansionist interests in the mid-1930s. The Axis described its goals as breaking the hegemony of the Western plutocratic powers, i.e. those under the influence or power of money, and defending civilization against communism.
