Young Ensign Jack Sterling arrives at a Texas border aviation camp expecting shipboard duty, only to find himself assigned to the nascent Naval Aviation Corps. With zero flight experience and a healthy fear of heights, he must master radio work aboard temperamental dirigibles while tensions simmer along the Rio Grande.

When a charismatic Mexican traveler on the train south proves oddly well-informed about fleet movements, and a fellow officer warns Jack to guard his tongue, the line between courtesy and espionage blurs. Soon the camp’s silver airships are casting off into treacherous Gulf winds, carrying Jack into a sky where storms, bandits, and shifting loyalties await.
