The meanings of Stephen, in Greek, are wreath, crown, honor to explain his conversion and death. His death was smothered in agony and pain. Fortunately not all followers were executed. Stephen showed great knowledge of history and Mosaic law. He was designated by the Apostles as one of seven original church deacons and first bishop. Acts describes Stephen as having an angelic appearance and performing great miracles.

His knowledge, piety and passion for the truth drew much ire from the Sanhedrin. As the first Christian martyr, he stands out because he delivered one of the most fiery defenses of our Christian faith. Because these leaders couldn’t silence him, they sentenced Stephen to death by stoning!

You can read about how the culture in the early first century impacted Jesus' ministry, the meaning behind His preferred title and the full range of Stephen's life. He became a model for the Christian community throughout the years leading to today!
