What is the need of Puranam Story

Purana is a vast genre of Indian literature about a wide range of topics, particularly about legends and other traditional lore. The Puranas are known for the intricate layers of symbolism depicted within their stories. Composed originally in Sanskrit and in other Indian languages, several of these texts are named after major Hindu gods such as Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma and Adi Shakti. The Puranic genre of literature is found in both Hinduism and Jainism. The content is highly inconsistent across the Puranas, and each Purana has survived in numerous manuscripts which are themselves inconsistent. The Hindu Maha Puranas are traditionally attributed to "Vyasa", but many scholars considered them likely the work of many authors over the centuries; in contrast, most Jaina Puranas can be dated and their authors assigned. They have been influential in the Hindu culture, inspiring major national and regional annual festivals of Hinduism. Their role and value as sectarian religious texts and historical texts has been controversial because all Puranas praise many gods and goddesses and "their sectarianism is far less clear cut" than assumed, states Ludo Rocher. The religious practices included in them are considered Vaidika (congruent with Vedic literature), because they do not preach initiation into Tantra. The Bhagavata Purana has been among the most celebrated and popular text in the Puranic genre, and is, in the opinion of some, of non-dualistic tenor. But, the dualistic school of Shriman Madhvacharya has a rich and strong tradition of dualistic interpretation of the Bhagavata, starting from the Bhagavata Taatparya Nirnaya of the Acharya himself and later, commentaries on the commentary. The Chaitanya school also rejects outright any monistic interpretation of the purana. The Puranic literature wove with the Bhakti movement in India, and both Dvaita and Advaita scholars have commented on the underlying Vedantic themes in the Maha Puranas

புராணங்கள் என்பவை வேதங்களில் உள்ள கருத்துகளை தெளிவாக கூறுவதாகும். புராணம் என்ற சொல்லிற்கு பழமை வாய்ந்தது என்று பொருள். நெடுங்காலமாக செவிவழியாகவே கற்பிக்கப்பட்டு வந்த புராணங்கள் வேதவியாசர் என்பவரால் நூல்களாக தொகுப்பட்டுள்ளன. இவற்றில் வேதவியாசரே தொகுத்த பதினெட்டு புராணங்கள் மகாபுராணங்கள் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகின்றன. இவையல்லாத உபபுராணங்கள் பதினெட்டும் புராணங்களாகக் கொள்ளப்படுகின்றன. இப்புராணங்களில் வேதத்தில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளவைகளின் சாரங்கள் கதைகளின் வடிவில் ஸ்லோகங்களாக இயற்றப்பட்டுள்ளன. அவை பேரண்டங்களின் தோற்றம், அவற்றின் பிரளயம், மும்மூர்த்திகள் தோற்றம் மற்றும் அவர்களின் அவதாரங்கள், தேவர் -அரக்கர்களின் போர்கள் போன்றவைகள் பலவற்றினையும் விவரிக்கின்றன. புராணம் என்ற சொல் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில் மணிமேகலையில் முதன்முதலில் வருகிறது. சமயக் கணக்கர்தம் திறம் கேட்ட காதையில் வைணவவாதியைக் குறிப்பிடும் போது, காதல் கொண்டு கடல்வணன் புராணம் ஓதினான் என்று குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதனால், புராணம் என்ற சொல், தமிழ் மொழியில் மணிமேகலை தோன்றிய காலத்திலேயே வழங்கப் பெற்றுள்ளது என அறிய முடிகிறது. "புராணவித், புராணி" போன்ற சொற்கள் ரிக் வேதத்திலும் அதர்வண வேதத்திலும் காணப்படுகின்றன. எனினும் இச் சொற்கள் புராணத்தைக் குறிக்கவில்லை. பழமையானவன், பழமையைப் பரப்புகிறவன் என்ற பொருளிலேயே இச்சொற்கள் வழங்கியிருக்கின்றன. திருவாசகத்திலே மாணிக்கவாசகர் முதலில் பாடியது சிவபுராணம். அங்கே புராணம் என்பதில் இறைவனுடைய பழமையைச் சொல்கிறார்கள். ஆகவே புராணம் என்ற சொல்லுக்குப் பழமை என்பது பொருள். சேக்கிழாரின் பெரியபுராணம் புகழ்பெற்றது. இத்தகைய சிறப்புமிக்க புராணங்கள் பற்றி பேராசிரியர் முனைவர் கு.ஞானசம்பந்தன் விரிவாக விவரிக்கிறார் கேட்டு மகிழுங்கள்.
