Nog vóór Brave New World en 1984 was er 'Wij', geschreven door Jevgeni Zamjatin, de eerste anti-utopische roman. Hij speelt in de toekomst, ongeveer duizend jaar na nu, in de Eenheidsstaat. Alle huizen zijn van glas, de bewoners leven volgens een strikt rooster. Er wordt gewerkt aan de Grote Operatie, waarbij mensen hun fantasie wordt afgenomen. De hoofdpersoon, d-503, wordt verliefd op de kritische i-330, waardoor zijn loyaliteit aan de staat in gevaar komt. 'Wij' kon niet in de Sovjet-Unie verschijnen, maar werd wel in onder andere het Engels vertaald. Waarschijnlijk heeft het boek zowel Aldous Huxley als George Orwell beïnvloed.
