عرف الأدب العربي القديم ما يسمى بـ (أدب الرسائل)، وظهر منذ وقت مبكر، وقبل أن يعرف الوطن العربي مؤسسات البريد، وحيث تعود بعض أشهر الرسائل لسنوات مبكرة بعد ظهور الإسلام، وحتى قبل ظهورها بشكل أكثر تطورا في ظل دول الخلافة الإسلامية المتعاقبة، ولكن ما حدث بعد ظهور مؤسسات البريد في العالم العربي في بداية القرن الماضي، أن كان لهذه المؤسسات أثر كبير انتشار (أدب الرسائل)، خاصة مع حرص بعض أشهر الأدباء في تاريخ الأدب العربي على مراسلة بعضهم البعض، وهو ما التفت له ناشرون في وقت مبكر من القرن الماضي، كما التفتوا إلى أهمية نشر الرسائل التي كان ينشرها الأدباء والمشاهير إلى زوجاتهم أو من يرتبطون معهم بعلاقة صداقة أو بعلاقة شخصية وطيدة.
