يعطينا هذا الكتاب فكرة عامة جيدة عن مذاهب فرويد وتلاميذه ومدى اختلافاتهم، ويوضح في جلاء ما هو مقبول من المبادئ "الفرويدية"، وما يحتاج إلى دليل يؤيده، كما يعرض الشاذ الذي يرفضه العقل والمنطق، وبرغم مضي سنوات على صدور مؤلفات فرويد فإن كتاب جوزيف جاسترو يعد من خير الكتب التي عنيت بعرض المذاهب "الفرويدية" ونقدها بروح طيبة رغم ما يبدو من نقد لاذع في بعض الأحيان. وقد يلاحظ بعض القراء بطء العلم في تحقيق ما اختلف عليه العلماء في التحليل النفسي، ولكن نظرة إلى الماضي الطويل وما سجلنا فيه من اكتشافات نفسية تقنعهم بأن علم النفس تقدم بخطوات واسعة منذ ظهر "فرويد" الذي فتح آفاقاً جديدة لسير أغوار النفس البشرية الشديدة التعقيد.
