يسلط الكتاب الضوء على تاريخ عُمان في الفترة الزمنية الممتدة من عام 1856م وحتى عام 1868م، وهي الفترة التي بدأ فيها زوال النفوذ العُماني تدريجياً من منطقة الخليج العربي وشرق إفريقيا؛ نتيجة للاضطرابات الداخلية التي رافقت تلك الفترة والمؤثرات الخارجية التي لحقتها، مما أدى إلى تغير الدور المهم الذي كانت تؤديه عُمان وقتها، ثم اضمحلال دورها السياسي والاقتصادي المؤثر على أوضاع المنطقة، فبعد أن كانت عُمان محور التجارة في المنطقة انتهى بها الأمر إلى كساد تجارتها وضعف اقتصادها.
