يسعى هذا الكتاب أن يرسم صورة موجزة لنشأة العلوم الرياضية منذ أحس الإنسان حاجته إليها، ومنذ كانت معارفه وحاجاته أولية يسيرة، ثم تتبع هذه العلوم عند مختلف الأمم القديمة حتى وصلنا إلى العرب؛ فتتبع تطور هذه العلوم عندهم منذ العصر الجاهلي إلى عصرهم الذهبي في أيام المأمون العباسي حيث نبغ محمد بن موسى وذاع صيته في الآفاق .. يقول المؤلفان "غايتنا أن نتبين في ضوء ذلك موقف العرب من العلوم الرياضية بالنسبة إلى غيرهم من الأمم، ونتبين أيضًا نصيب العرب في الاختراع، والابتداع في هذه العلوم، واخترنا شخصية الخوارزمي لأنها تمثل بدقة ما أبدعه العرب في علوم الرياضة وبخاصة الجبر".
