قليلون هم الكتاب الذين ارخوا بهذا الوضوح النزيه وبهذه الامانة الجسور لتطور الروح عبر مراحل الحياة. بيتر كامينتسيند (1904) ودميان (1919) وسدهارتا (1922) وذئب السهوب(1927) ونرسيس وغولدموند (1930) والرحلة الى الشرق(1932) وهي صيغ مختلفة لسيرة ذاتية روحية، ومصورات مختلفة لطريق جواني. فكل خطوة جديدة تنقح صورة الخطوات السابقة كلها، وكل تجربة تفتح عوالم جديدة من الاستكشاف في جهد مستمر للتواصل مع الرؤيا. هرمان هيسه الحائز على جائزة نوبل للآداب في العام 1962 كان على صلة وثيقة بعالم الهند. وتأثر بالفلسفات الشرقية. وحين سئل مرة عن اهم المؤثرات في حياته قال انها "روح بيت ابوي المسيحية واللاوطنية ابدا" و"قراءة الروائع الصينية" و "شخصية المؤرخ جاكوب بركهاردت".
