تحكي رواية "السقطة "على لسان جون قصة المحامي الباريسي الناجح، الذي يتبنى قضايا المعدمين، والذي يتودد إلى الضعفاء والمهمشين. يسرد المحامي كيفية وأسباب سقوطه من أعلى الدرجات الاجتماعية إلى أحطها كما لو يستحضر سقوط الانسان من جنة عدن. وعبر هذا السقوط الذي يشكل الثيمة الرئيسة للرواية. يسرد المحامي حكاية نجاحه، ذلك النجاح التقليدي المتمثل فيما صاغه المجتمع، الناس، السلطة، أو أي مؤثر خارجي ليس نابعًا من الفرد ذاته. والإشكال في هذه الفكرة ليس في إقصائها للفرد على سبيل الجماعة، وإنما في افتراضها لوجود هذا المعيار الجمعي الناتج عن وجود معنى موضوعي لهذه الحياة، وهذا ما تتفق الفلسفات الوجودية على رفضه بالرغم من اختلافها مع بعضها البعض، فـالوجوديات تتفق على أن الوجود يسبق المعنى، وعليه فإن جوهر الحياة ليس أمرًا يستدعي البحث عنه، وإنما هو شيء يخلقه الفرد لذاته من أجل عيش حياة غير عبثية.
