في سنة ١٩٣٨م لفت نظري وأنا أقرأ الأغاني في ترجمة حنين بن إسحاق كلمة عن الفتوة، فهمت منها أن لها نظامًا خاصًّا، وأن للفتيان في كل بلد مكانًا يجتمعون فيه ويسأل عنهم الغريب ويقصدهم، فتتبعت في الأغاني وغيره الحديث عنها. ثم رجع ذهني إلى الجاهلية، فتصفحت بعض كتب الأدب، وخصوصًا ديوان الحماسة والمفضليات، وكيف استعملوا كلمة فتوة استعمالات مختلفة. ثم رأيت أن الصوفيين وضعوا في أشهر كتبهم بابًا للفتوة أبانوا فيه معناها. ثم كان أن قرأت رحلة ابن بطوطة فرأيته أثناء رحلته في البلاد التركية يشيد بذكر الفتوة فيها ويبين إكرامهم للضيوف ومعاملتهم بعضهم لبعض، ثم عرضت لكلمة الفتوة في العصر الحديث. كل هذا دعاني إلى أن أبحث في الفتوة وأتتبع معانيها في العصور المختلفة من العصر الجاهلي إلى اليوم.
