يغلب على ظن الكثيرين أن الصهيونية حركة دينية قديمة، وأنها مرتبطة بما ورد من الوعود للخليل إبراهيم - عليه السلام.. والواقع أنها ليست بالحركة الدينية، وليست بالحركة القديمة في بني إسرائيل أنفسهم، ولكنها حركة سياسية تابعة لقيام الدولة وسقوطها في بيت داود. وإذا رجعنا إلى كلمة «صهيون» نفسها لم نجد لها أصلًا متفقًا عليه في اللغة العبرية، وأكثر الشراح يرجحون أنها عربية الأصل لها نظير في اللغة الحبشية، وأنها من مادة الصون والتحصين، وكانت فعلًا من حصون الروابي العالية. والمقصود بالعربية هنا لغة الأصلاء من أبناء الجزيرة الذين سكنوا أرض فلسطين قبل هجرة العبرانيين بمئات السنين. عباس محمود العقاد
