«الغادة الإنجليزية» رواية رومانسية عذبة تُعد من علامات إبداع المرأة العربية في بدايات النهضة الأدبية، حيث نسجت لبيبة ماضي نصًا يكشف عن أعماق النفس الأنثوية وما يعتريها من مشاعر وأسرار قد يجهلها الرجل، فيغدو حكمه على المرأة ناقصًا وظالمًا. في هذه الرواية، تتجلى براعة الكاتبة في تقديم الحوادث والمواقف التي تضع القارئ أمام أسئلة ملحة عن الحب، والغيرة، والوفاء، وتفتح نافذة لفهم طبيعة المرأة وما وراء قراراتها. وما يثير الجدل أن الرواية نُسبت إلى التعريب دون الإفصاح عن صاحبها الأجنبي، حتى ذهب بعض النقاد إلى أنها مؤلَّفة عن بيئة أجنبية أُسقطت عليها أسماء وأماكن جديدة، لتتخفف الكاتبة من قيود مجتمعها الشرقي. أهدت لبيبة عملها هذا لبنات جيلها من الفتيات والنساء، ليكون رسالةً صادقة عن المرأة وحقوقها العاطفية والإنسانية، مما جعلها نصًا ثوريًا بملامح رومانسية حالمة.
