يأتي هذا الكتاب بمثابة ترجمة لأعمال المؤلف وتعريف به وطريقة اشتغاله بعلوم الدين. يبدأ الكتاب بمقدمة تعرف بالمخطوط، وصور عنه يلي ذلك قراءة للفلك المشحون في أحوال محمد بن طولون وتضم ستة فصول متلاحقة: الفصل الأول: النشأة.. والإشتغال بالعلم، الفصل الثاني الوظائف والمناصب، الفصل الثالث قائمة المؤلفات التي ألفها بن طولون والتي أجمعها في هذا الكتاب، الفصل الرابع: ويضم ملحق قائمة المؤلفات وهو ما لم يورده المؤلف وإنما جاء من صنعة محقق الكتاب، ثم الفصل الخامس وجاء في ثناء العلماء عليه ومدحهم له ويأتي الفصل السادس والأخير في الشعر ويتضمن قصيدة (في حث طالب العلم على العمل).
