كعادة من يتناولون كتب دراسة الشخصيات، يأتي السؤال: من هو جحا؟ هل هو شخص حقيقي، أم أنه من خيال كاتب مبدع؟، وإذا كان حقيقيًا ففي أي عصر عاش؟، وهل هو عربي أم أعجمي؟ فكثيرًا ما ظهر جحا في حكاياته، قاضيًا يقضي بين متخاصمين، أو فلاحًا يزرع أرضه، أو تاجرًا، أو نديمًا للملك والأمير، أو حكيمًا.. ويعود ظهور شخصية جحا إلى القرن الأول الهجري أي القرن السابع الميلادي، وهي لرجل عربي اسمه (دُجين بن ثابت الفزاري)،وفي كتب التراث قيل أنه قدروى عنه أسلم مولى عمر بن الخطاب، وهشام بن عروة، وعبد الله بن المبارك، وآخرون. وقد قال الشيرازي عن دُجين بن ثابت: "جُحا لقب له، وكان ظريفًا، والذي يقال فيه مكذوب عليه".
