حين أعدت قراءة هذا الكتاب، بعد أربعة وعشرين عاما من صدور طبعته الأولى، تذكرت ما عن لبعض قرائه من وصفه بالشعوبية وأنه محاولة لتقويض أكثر قيم العرب شيوعا، واعني بها قيمة الكرم، ولذلك حرصت في مقدمة الطبعة الثالثة أن أؤكد على أن تحليل الخطاب ليس معنيا بإثبات صفة أو نزعها، وإنما تنصب عنايته على الجذور الكامنة وراء ما يؤسسه ذلك الخطاب من قيم، الجذور التي تنزع عن القيم بعدها الميتافيزيقي وتكشف البعد الإنساني الذي تؤول إليه.
