دوّن أبو عثمان عمرو بن بحر الجاحظ في كتابه "البُخلاء" بعض صور البُخل في الذين قابلهم وتعرف عليهم في بيئته الخاصة خصوصًا في بلدة مرو عاصمة خراسان، وقد صور البخلاء تصويراً واقعياً فكاهياً نفسياً.. فضح خفايا أسرارهم و الحياة في منازلهم وأطلع القراء على مختلف أحاديثهم، وكشف عن نفسياتهم ونظراتهم القلقة أو المطمئنة ونزواتهم النفسية في مختلف أحوالهم جميعاً. ويمتاز الكتاب بخفة الدم وبروح الدعابة الهزلية ، ولم يقم الجاحظ في كتابه بتجريحهم أو إيذاء مشاعرهم بل قام ببسط تصرفهم وعرض لطريقة اقتصادهم ومحاربتهم الإسراف واستخدامهم للمال ، ولا شك أن بعض شخصيات الكتاب من نسج خيال المؤلف وغير موجودين في الواقع . يُعد الكتاب بمثابة دراسة اجتماعية تربوية نفسية اقتصادية لهذا الصنف من الناس ، وقد ضم بين دفتيه الكثير من أسماء الأعلام والمشاهير والمغمورين ، وكذلك أسماء البلدان والأماكن وصفات أهلها والعديد من أبيات الشعر النادرة والمفيدة بموضوعها والأحاديث والآثار، فالكتاب موسوعة أدبية اجتماعية جغرافية تاريخية.
