في هذه المجموعة القصصية يتناول نجيب محفوظ الأوضاع المحلية والصراعات العالمية بأسلوب يتَّسم بالسخرية المبطنة، ويعتمد العبثية والغرائبية في بناء عوالمه القصصية. يتجلى ذلك بوضوحٍ في قصة «شهر العسل» حيث نلتقي بالعروسين اللذين يعودان لبيتهما الفاخر بعد انقضاء شهر العسل، فيكتشفان أن البيت قد احتُلَّ من قِبَلِ أغراب. فيقرران الاستغاثة بالمارَّة العابرين أمام العمارة، وهنالك يباغتهما وابل من الطوب ينهال عليهما من الخارج بمجرد أن يفتحا الشباك. وتمضي القصة وتتصاعد أحداثها في هذا الإطار العبثي والباعث على التوتُّر، والذي ينطوي على العديد من الرموز والإيحاءات التي تفتح باب تأويل القصة على مصراعيه.
