وبدأ القطار يتحرك والناس على الرصيف متشبثون بنوافذه، ويحثون الخطا بجواره، ويتفننون في إلقاء كلمات الوداع على المسافرين ويذكرونهم بمهم الأمور في تلك اللحظة الأخيرة- إلا شباك ليلى فإنه لم يكن في اتجاهه أحد. وخف القطار قليلاً في مسيره وحانت من المسافرة التفاتة. فرأت فتاة تعدو ملئ ساقيها، وتلوح لها بمنديل وتقول: «مع السلامة» والصوت لاهث والنفس مبهور، ولم تكن سوى أحلام جاءت لوداعها فسبقها القطار. فلوحت ليلى بمنديلها هي الأخرى، وزادت سرعة القطار فحجزت بينهما. ورأى الواقفون على الرصيف هناك كلا منهما وقد وضعت منديلها على عينيها لتكفكف به دمعة مسفوحة
