بدأ علم الاجتماع بدأ أشواطه الأولى بالنظر في الجماعات الإنسانية نظرًا سطحيًّا صرفًا، فكان علمًا وصفيًّا تناول طبائع الشعوب وعاداتها ونظاماتها المدنية والأهلية والسياسية، ولكنه لم يبحث في كيفية نشوء هذه النظامات إلا بعد أن وُضعت علوم الحياة على أساس من التجاريب العلمية، أفسحت للمباحث الاجتماعية سبيل النظر في الأسباب التي كونت الجماعات الإنسانية الأولى والأسباب التي ساقت إلى تطورها ونشوئها، فكانت هذه الأبحاث خطوة كبيرة خطاها علم الاجتماع متدرجًا في تلك السبيل التي لا بد من أن تسلم به يومًا لأن يكون من العلوم اليقينية الإثباتية بقدر المستطاع.
